A desire to further comprehend the hydrodynamic characteristics of three-dimensional undulating fin propulsion is what motivates work. First, a high-resolution numerical technique based on constraint immersed boundary method utilized simulate fluid-fin system. The simulation results reveal fundamental variation laws between performance and kinematic parameters. According data, an in-depth analysis scaling law conducted. key contribution this work build force formula extend complicated cases involving different incoming flow velocities. important application that it can be used estimate self-propelled speed wave efficiency in conditions. show exhibits monotonically bounded increasing trend as amplitude grows, basically independent frequency, decreases with wavelength. Finally, discusses evolution vortex structures propulsion. indicates streamwise central jet formed throughout body primary reason for thrust generation Furthermore, basic dynamic mechanisms two types rings, related formation jet, are investigated macro-interaction mechanism fluid flow. findings could make explaining some biological phenomena developing bionic engineering.

Propulsion performance of a skeleton-strengthened fin.
We examine numerically the performance of a thin foil reinforced by embedded rays resembling the caudal fins of many fishes. In our study, the supporting rays are depicted as nonlinear Euler-Bernoulli beams with three-dimensional deformability. This structural model is then incorporated into a boundary-element hydrodynamic model to achieve coupled fluid-structure interaction simulation. Kinemat...

Myliobatidae is a family of large pelagic rays including the manta ray, Manta birostris. They are extremely efficient swimmers, can cruise at high speeds and can perform turn-on-a-dime maneuvering, making these fishes excellent inspiration for an autonomous underwater vehicle. Manta rays have been studied from a biological perspective; however the hydrodynamic performance of their large-amplitu...
متن کاملNumerical Study on Hydrodynamic Performance of Bionic Caudal Fin
In this work, numerical simulations are conducted to reveal the hydrodynamic mechanism of caudal fin propulsion. In the modeling of a bionic caudal fin, a universal kinematics model with three degrees of freedom is adopted and the flexible deformation in the spanwise direction is considered. Navier-Stokes equations are used to solve the unsteady fluid flow and dynamic mesh method is applied to ...
